Russ Jamieson Books, Personal Development, Philosophy, Spirituality

The Undefeated Mind: On the Science of Constructing an Indestructible Self by Alex Lickerman is about cultivating the inner strength we need to enjoy the difficult lives we all have.  It can be summarized in two parts… first, how to survive and thrive in the face of adversity (personality hardiness), and second, how to overcome obstacles and keep going.  There are a lot more lessons to be pulled out of it, but that’s a quick snapshot. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius – Life Lessons

Russ Jamieson Books, Personal Development, Philosophy, Spirituality

Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) was the Roman Emperor from 161 until his death in 180.  He was known as Marcus the wise and was the last of the five good emperors. You might remember him as the old guy from the movie Gladiator.  During his later years, while he was commanding his armies, he wrote down many of his thoughts on Stoic philosophy.  These personal writings consisted of 12 books (called Meditations, meaning “to himself”) which he wrote over the last 10 years of his life.  They were a source for his own guidance and self-improvement and are still very relevant for us today. Quick note: Stoicism was founded by Zeno (300 bce).  His teachings continued and evolved until the later Stoics …

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig

Russ Jamieson Books, Philosophy

It is only 418 pages (the version I read – 25th anniversary edition), but it took me ages to read! It is an interesting philosophical fiction with many interesting life questions, but it just couldn’t hold my attention very well.  So be warned, it may feel a little slow at times, but hang in there.  Anyways, I finally forced myself to read past the first few chapters and was happy that I made it through the entire book, but I will not be reading it again anytime soon!  This book was a huge success when it was released in 1974 and interestingly, this book was rejected 121 times by publishers.  Robert is persistent (it did take him 4 years to …

Ram Dass – Life Is Inside Every Breath

Russ Jamieson Philosophy, Spirituality

Ram Dass speaks to us in this wonderful YouTube video.  Here are some snippets…. Please watch! “The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere. They’re in each other all along. 3 Planes – Different from one another 1 – Ego plane 2 – Soul Plane 3 – Pure awareness (Not really a plane) Your whole sense of separateness came from some uncomfortable experience which pushed you from that oneness. All of separateness is built on relationship between things. The ego is a web of relationships based on specialness. We are caught in a drama so thick based on our egos. The first thing you …
