Are We All Related?

Russ Jamieson Random, Science, Spirituality

I love my fellow man!  Maybe it’s because we are all family.  Did you know that we are all at least 50th cousins?  This can be explained by the idea of pedigree collapse.  You can read more about it here – Pedigree Collapse and here – The Straight Dope. What I take away from that is 2 things… 1 – Since we are all related, we should treat each other like family.  The next time you see a stranger, think of them as a distant cousin and your demeanor will change towards them.  Feeling irritated towards someone?  Think of them as that annoying cousin, but you still love them and treat them with kindness.  It changes your whole outlook on strangers. …

Willpower – Effective Ways to Enhance your Willpower

Russ Jamieson Personal Development

I discussed habits in my last post and wanted to further explain willpower since it plays such a critical role in developing habits.  Lack of willpower is a HUGE reason why people can’t follow through with their goals. What is willpower? Willpower, also known as self-control, is the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals.  Some people have more than others simply because they have exercised it like a muscle and made it stronger, but willpower is a limited resource.  Research shows that you only have a certain amount of willpower.  Think of it like a willpower life bar.  You start with a full bar in the morning and use it up throughout the day.  Ever …

Habits – How to Change your Habits

Russ Jamieson Books, Personal Development

Do you want to change your life?  If so, you need to first change your habits! We are creatures of habit.  When you wake up in the morning, you probably follow a certain routine… Checking your cell phone, checking your e-mail, drinking a glass of water, getting some coffee, etc.  Throughout the day you can count on other habits to occur, even if you are not fully aware of them.  We think that we’re making well considered decisions… but we are not.  Most things that occur throughout the day happen automatically without much thought at all.  Habits run your life.  If you want to change your life, change your habits.  Fortunately, once you understand how habits work, you can change them with greater success. …

Dale Carnegie – How to Win Friends and Influence People

Russ Jamieson Books, Personal Development

The title of this book screams – “how to manipulate people”.  Well, at least it did to me.  But after reading it, it’s actually a great book with sound principals that are genuine in nature.  Dale’s methods are still used today in business and personal life, even though many are thought to be new and revolutionary by some. Dale Carnegie published How to Win Friends & Influence People in 1936 and it outlines some very effective ways to deal with people in a positive way.  Dale stresses that you must be genuine and sincere in your approach.  If you are not genuine, people will know you are attempting to manipulate them. Dale Carnegie was originally a sales man, but then became a …

Get Out of Debt and Save for Your Future!

Russ Jamieson Books

Debt sucks!  It really, really sucks.  I’ve been there (over $40,000 in the hole, with nothing to show for it) and it’s depressing as hell!  It truly is a suffocating feeling… But, with patience and a few smart practices, it can be overcome. I just finished Dave Ramsey’s book – The Total Money Makeover: Classic Edition: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness.  I really enjoyed Dave’s no nonsense, simple approach.  Below I have outlined his 7 steps to a total money makeover.  They are extremely simple, but the catch – it will require time and patience.  Dave repeatedly states that you shouldn’t expect to get out of debt overnight with some debt consolidation scheme.  Stay away from those!  Getting out …

How to Stop Caring What Others Think

Russ Jamieson Spirituality

Have you ever wondered why we care so much about what other people think of us? Have you ever wondered why you let people you don’t even know have so much influence over your life? For some, this problem can be life crippling. It can become an obsession. This is a topic that has perplexed me in the past, so I researched it and have an article laid out below which goes over why we do this, why it’s insane, why you shouldn’t do this, and how to make some big shifts in your life starting today that will set you on the path to being free from the opinions of others. It’s human nature to care what other people …

How to Become More Confident

Russ Jamieson Personal Development

Confidence is a paradox. Those with high levels of confidence don’t seem to care what other people think, which seems to give them more confidence. Those with low levels of confidence care too much what other people think, lowering their level of confidence. Additionally, there is the Dunning-Kruger effect – the less competent a person is, the more they overestimate themselves.  The more skilled a person is, the more they underestimate their competency.  It’s a messy topic which is why I want to break it down for you and show you how to increase your confidence.  It’s a quality that we all admire and want to have because it’s extremely important if you want a happy, successful, and fulfilling life.Vidmate …

The Miracle of Self-Discipline

Russ Jamieson Books

Want to get things done and be successful?  It all comes down to your level of self-discipline. No matter what goal you are trying to reach in your life (fitness, health, wealth, etc.), the number one, most important principal to achieving this goal is your level of self-discipline.  The habit of self-discipline must be cultivated.  You must make those small daily sacrifices in order to reap the rewards down the road. I wouldn’t even really call them sacrifices.  You are merely shifting the way you think in order to have a brighter future.  So, instead of thinking of it as a sacrifice, think of it as a better way to make decisions for your future self.  Make decisions that serve …

Zen in the Art of Archery

Russ Jamieson Books

I just finished a little book called Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel, and it was good enough to post about it.  That’s saying a lot!  OK, not really, but it was a neat, short book you could read in one sitting if you’re a speedy reader (I am not).  It is now considered a classic since it was published in 1953 and was one of the first to delve deeply into the mysterious world of Zen and Eastern philosophy. Zen in the Art of Archery – On Amazon Archery has been a part of Japanese culture and their way of life for thousands of years.  Initially  it was developed by the Samurai as a weapon, but over …
